Why did the Jews of Sighet think they were being deported? Why do you suppose their destination was kept secret from them?

Some thought that the Germans merely wanted to steal their valuables while they (the Jews) were gone. The destination was kept a secret because they were being sent to one of the notorious Nazi death camps.
