Elie tries to keep control of himself. It would have been easy for him to simply let go of his former self and become snarling animals like many of the other prisoners. Elie strives to keep a semblance of his waning Jewish faith as well as the empathy that he always had as a boy. There are things that Elie would rather die than do.
