why does elie say that flames consomed his faith(in gods faith)forever

He says this because his faith had burned up....... it had dissipated in the flames with the babies (he'd seen them thrown into the ovens alive), and all the rest of the death around him. His beliefs had disintegrated into ashes...... nothing was left.
