Why is Eliezer’s father upset that Eliezer did not go with his mother?

Eliezer's father wished his son had gone with his mother for his safety..... believing that he himself was destined to be burned alive. This is ironic because this was not to be their fate.... but it was the fate of Elie's mother and sisters.
