why was elie so pleased aboput saving his gold crown

Well, it meant that he could still eat without pain. Beyond that the crown was a part of himself that he was able to keep, one less thing for the German's to exploit. Elie also wanted it just in case he needed to sell it himself for food. In the end Elie had to give it up to the Nazis for nothing.
