Annemarie's silence makes Ellen sad. The girl really has no direct interaction with Annamarie other than confusion and a feeling of sorrow for the family. It is Annemarie who has a difficult time with the silence.... she hates lying to her friend, even if it is to protect her.
Ellen was silent, and had a sad expression.
