Why does Ellen spend a night with Annemarie?

Mr. Johansen explains they are going to pretend Ellen is their own daughter and keep her in plain site so the Nazis do not suspect that Ellen is a Jew.
Ellen spends the night with Annemarie because the Nazis were in search of the Jews all over Denmark. As Ellen was a Jew, she needed protection in order to live so she spent the night with Annemarie, acting as Lise.
