His "departure" reflects many of the characteristics of the society in which the play was originally presented. Oedipus is able, through the proper rites and preparation, to bring good fortune to the city where he has been residing. The gods will take him away; his daughters are left in the care of King Theseus. He knows they will be safe, but he also knows that once he is dead, they are truly alone without their brothers nearby.
