According to Creon, what were the circumstances of Laius' death?

The messenger who returned from the scene of Laius' death lies about what happened because he realizes the killer is Oedipus, the new king.  He tells them that at the crossroads they were attacked by a band of robbers rather than just one person.  No on thinks to look for just one murderer.
