Does Oedipus' punishment seem to fit his crime of killing Laius? Is justice the point of the play? If not, what is?

Oedipus's punishment has several implications. Killing his dad and sleeping with his mother was bad enough (yuck!) Having a pestilence problem was motivation enough to find Oedipus's true identity. I think though that banishment and gouging his own eyes out becomes more symbolic than anything else. I think the point or theme of the play comes down to seeing what is real and what is not. Oedipus blinds himself, because what he has metaphorically seen (i.e. realized) leaves him unable to face his family or his parents in the afterlife). As with the previous theme, sight/blindness operate both literally and metaphorically within the play. Indeed, literal sight is juxtaposed with 'insight' or 'foresight'.
