Why did Oedipus go to Delphi and what was he told there?

Oedipus sent Creon to Delphi. He did not go there himself. Creon is told that in order to save the city, they must “Drive out a pollution…. Grown ingrained within the land” (98-9) - namely the murderer of Laius.
