Why did Candy confess that he should have been the one to deal with his dog? How does this relate to what George had to do at the end of the novel?

The other men in the bunk house claimed that Candy's dog was old, useless, and smelled. There was not much Candy could do. After the shot Candy turns over on his cot and muffles his sobs. Later while Carlson is cleaning his gun Candy sadly repeats that he should have been the one who killed his own dog. It was his dog and he should have been the one to end its life. This foreshadows George having to kill his own best friend, Lennie, at the end of the book.
