What is the central conflict of the story and how does it evolve through the story?
The central conflict is split between isolation and George's care over Lennie. Isolation pervades the story. Every character is conflicted by it. George and Lennie are unique because they travel together. Lennie however has the emotional maturity of a six-year-old and keeps getting in trouble. George must figure out a way to bail him out. This conflict spreads through the novel until the final tragic climax.
