Why does Steinbeck try to create sympathy for Lennie? Is he successful?
Lennie is completely sympathetic. Everyone understands that he is like a little boy.... that he doesn't know his own strength. We come to understand that he loves too much and too hard. We also comprehend the fact that the one thing he doesn't want to do is disappoint George..... all these things put together are a recipe for disaster. We wish we could stop it, even though we know it's coming.
