Chapter 6, Did George make the correct decision shooting Lennie?

In chapter 6, George shot Lennie in order to prevent Lennie from dying slowly and painfully in the hands of Curley.

George had no choice but to shoot Lennie. Slim points out that If Curley and the mob somehow had not killed Lennie, he would have been locked in a cage. The most likely situation would be the men torturing and killing Lennie.
