Now Candy spoke his greatest fear. "You anā me can get that little place, canāt we, George? You anā me can go there anā live nice, canāt we, George? Canāt we?"
Before George answered, Candy dropped his head and looked down at the hay. He knew.
George said softly, "āI think I knowed from the very first. I think I knowād weād never do her. He usta like to hear about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would."
"Thenāitās all off?" Candy asked sulkily.
George didnāt answer his question. George said, "Iāll work my month anā Iāll take my fifty bucks anā Iāll stay all night in some lousy cat house. Or Iāll set in some poolroom till everābody goes home. Anā then Iāll come back anā work another month anā Iāll have fifty bucks more."
