Well you have George and Lennie who communicate on a very elementary level. George is a parent-figure who must converse on a Grade 2 level with big Lennie. There is an unspoken communication between the two forged by a close bond but is too is very parent-child like. The other men really don't communicate much. One of the major themes of this story is isolation and loneliness. Slim craves some intellectual and positive social interaction, he gets that with George.
