From the beginning of the novel there is a sense that trouble usually comes their way. Lennie can't comprehend social interactions, especially with women. He is a child in a grown man's body. Being chased out of Weed gives us a sense of what is to come. George points out their emergency meeting point should things go wrong at their new place. This is perhaps reflective of what George knows will happen even before they get there.
