Each character in chapter 4 is tormented by loneliness or the threat of loneliness. Steinbeck brings characters from different backgrounds to share their pain that is at once different but similar. They all feel estranged from society. Each one processes their pain as unique yet the all share shades of the same ache. Curly's wife feels the pain of isolation so intensely that she threatens Crooks just so someone else feels more pain.
