Much of theme of this book has to do with loneliness. This is what makes the relationship between George and Lennie so special. Besides Curly, who has a major case of small guy complex (he seems to hate everyone), the men have superficial relationships. There seems to be a power structure at the ranch but the men pretty much do their work and try to keep their jobs. Slim seems to command a certain amount of respect outside of his job as crew head. The rest of the men draw clear lines that separate them by age, capability, colour and experience. It is a very lonely place.
