Although Lennie killed the mouse, he never meant to harm it. Lennie likes soft things but does not know his own strength. He ends up crushing it. This foreshadows bot the killing of the puppy and the killing of Curley's wife. In each case he is attracted to softness but inadvertently killing what he is petting.
