Though he is only a monir character in the novel, the Boss is important because he represents authority.... the man in charge. He is basically indifferent to the workers themselves, and he is only concerned with the bottom line...... running the ranch to the best of his capabilities. He does not mingle with the men, keeping himself separate. He is different, of higher standing, mingling with the employees simply isn't a part of his persona.
