Actually, if you read the quote in context, Slim doesn't mean funny as in ha ha, but rather something he finds unusual;
"Funny how you an' (Lenny) string along together."
What Slim means is that it is odd or unusual for men in their line of work to travel together. Slim is trying to understand the relationship between George and Lenny in a world of ranch hands who generally only worry about themselves.
