Both chapters begin with the description of setting rather than people. Chapter one describes the beauty, solitude, and calmness of the Salinas Valley. Chapter two takes us directly to the ranch and the bunkhouse. The two setting are complete opposites, and the calm beauty of Chapter One is quickly replaced by the hustle and bustles of close quarters.
