How does the account of Whitney 's quitting contribute to the book's mood of alienation?

This example of alienation reinforces the idea that the ranch hands have no ties or relationships. All in all, they're loners. When asked why Whitey quit, Cady has no answer.... just that he took off...... an everyday happening of no concern. No one cared enough to ask.

"Why... he... just quit, the way a guy will. Says it was the food. Just wanted to move. Didn't give no other reason but the food. Just says 'gimme my time' one night, the way any guy would."
