Curley picks fights with bigger men. If he wins he can crow about beating a bigger man, if he looses he can complain about how the man was so big and it was not a fair fight.

To me, Curley acts this way because he feels trapped and frustrated with his own life. He’s the boss’s son, so people obey him, but they don’t truly respect him. That may be why he keeps trying to start conflicts, it’s his way of forcing attention and authority.

This explanation does a great job of showing Curley’s aggressive personality and how it creates tension on the ranch from the very beginning. I like how the response connects the Swamper’s comment to the larger themes of conflict and insecurity in the novel. Clear and insightful analysis!
