What does Candy say about his dog in Chapter 3 that's important?

In Chapter Three, the first important comment Candy makes about his dog explains his love for him. Candy's dog is his family.... the one companion he's had for a lengthy period of time. His dog is far more than a pet.

The old man squirmed uncomfortably. "Well- hell! I had him so long. Had him since he was a pup. I herded sheep with him." He said proudly, "You wouldn't think it to look at him now, but he was the best damn sheep dog I ever seen."

The second thing he says of importance is that he will not be responsible for his dog's death. This comment, once again supports the feeling of family.... sticking things out until their natural end.

Candy looked about unhappily. "No," he said softly. "No, I couldn't do that. I had 'im too long."
