Loneliness and isolation are themes that pervade this book. Both the ranch hands and Curley's wife feel alone and estranged from the world. Curley's wife has it worse because she is the only woman on a ranch full of men. Her husband is an abusive man with small guy complex. Curley's wife literally has nobody to talk to.
