what explanation does george give to the boss for lennies being slow? why does george tell him this?

George tells the boss that Lennie got kicked in the head by a horse when he was younger. I think that the whole concept of mentally challenged was not understood. George felt a simple explanation that the boss would understand might suffice so they could retain their jobs.
