what is candys reaction to the gunshot and later to carlson cleaning his gun

There was not much Candy could do. After the shot Candy turns over on his cot and muffles his sobs. Later while Carlson is cleaning his gun Candy sadly repeats that he should have been the one who killed his own dog.
