Various themes become apparent in Chapter Five. One important theme would be the American Dream..... a dream that becomes impossible because of Curley's wife's death. George, Lennie, Candy, and Crooks are all effected by the loss of this dream.

The setting feels detached from reality, as though the school exists in a separate dimension governed by bizarre rules.
