What is the tone of Carlson's comment that Ends the chapter: "now what the hell ya suppose is eatin' them two guys"?

Carlson and Curley couldn't understand why George and Slim wanted to get away from them. George was devastated, Slim was sympathetic...... of course Slim was also well aware of the circumstances surrounding Lennie's death. The others would have to believe what they were told.
