what purpose does george serve for the author?

George is sort of a compass for us throughout the book. He helps us navigate through the labyrinth of loneliness, frustrations and even beauty of the period.

The reader can easily sympathize with George. He both loves Lennie and is frustrated by Lennie. We see he moral integrity George has and take comfort in it as the book unfolds.
