The mood and atmosphere at the ranch is rather dark and lonely. Candy shows George and Lennie to the bunkhouse. Although old Candy is friendly enough, they can see how transient the men who work on the ranch are. They also meet Curley, the boss's son, who has a bad case of small guy complex. Curley goes after Lennie right away and threatens him. This oppresive atmosphere lingers for much of the book.
