The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression in the decade before World War II. Many men, like in the novel, travelled miles simply looking for work. They were known as itinerant labourers.They were cheap labour used for awhile and then told to move on.
It's a terrible year in New York, NY where men were poor and sitting on the streets and looking for jobs and earn money for food, shelter, water, and many other reasons. Many things were cheap and men couldn't afford many things. In Jack and Annie: Blizzard of the Blue Moon, Jack and Annie were part of the Great Depression etc. And they saw men by the subway boarding the trains for going to find work.
