Which parallels can you drag between Georges murder of Lennie and an incident today?

Parallels where a man can be trapped in the same situation like George became in the end of the movie.

That's difficult to say. Today, society (at least western society) treats such cases differently. George could not kill Lennie today. Well he could but George would be faced with the crime of murder himself. The concept of euthanasia (assisted suicide) is a closer parallel but still not quite the same.
