Of Mice and Men

Why do Lennie's hallucinations speak in his own voice?

I am having a hard time figuring this out.

In essence, Lennie is alone. Thinking a head, Steinbeck knew of the novella went onto become a film or stage version, Lennie would be the only one on the stage. In having Lennie use his own voice, the audience understand that the scene is hallucinatory.
