Why do you think George encourages Lennie to fight back when Curley hits him?

Curley is beating Lennie up and Lennie is not protecting himself. Lennie is getting hurt very badly so George gives Lennie the okay to protect himself.

Because George can see how Curley is hurting Lennie and that's when George yells at Lennie to defend himself.
