why does crooks say he was "jes foolin" about working on the ranch? did he really mean it? why does he change his mind?

 Crooks didn't mean he was just foolin...... he simply didn't want to get his hopes up for something that wasn't going to happen. He was denyiing what he wanted before anyone could tell him no. He was protecting himself.
