Why does George say that they cannot let Lennie escape to live on his own?

George says thaty they cannot let Lennie escape to live on his own, why?

George's reason is that he had given his word to Lennie's aunt Clara that he would take care of Lennie. I think the greater point here is that he truly loves Lennie and refuses to let anything happen to him.
