The biggest theme of this story is isolation and loneliness. These itinerant workers live lives of solitude travelling from place to place. Home is a distant memory and these men long for a place of their own: the long for a place that defines them and they belong to. George and Lennie do not want to travel the country working for other people, they want a place to belong to and call their own.
