The New boss is angry because George and Lennie are a day late. They missed the bus they were supposed to catch. Candy, the old ranch hand, tells them the boss is angry. George and Lennie are a little worried. This is depression era and jobs are hard to come by. Still, they do make it and George is quick thinking enough to calm the boss down a little.
