Why might Steinbeck give George his last name?

Some critics say that George's last name refers to John Milton, an English poet who wrote an epic poem called Paradise lost. Why might steinbeck give George this last name?

Some people believe that George represents the Adam in "Paradise Lost,"and like him is destined to walk the earth alone.
