What are some of the obstacles Dr.Seuss mentions?

Dr. Seuss writes that there will be unpleasant times and you might end up in a “slump” and it's not easy to “un-slump” yourself. He describes a place where “The streets are not marked” and “Some window are lightened. But mostly they're darkened.”
