How did Dr.Manette become mad?

Dr. Alexander Manette, a prisoner of the Bastille who is held there for 18 years

and is somewhat of a protagonist.He cannot escape the memory of being held in prision and sometimes has relaspes and cobbling shoes. He is a redundant character but plays an important role because his daughter lucie marries Charles.
