Oliver Twist is meant to appeal more to our sentiments than to our literary sensibilities. Some people thimk that Oliver is not a believable character, as he is raised in corrupt surroundings, and yet still able to retain his purity and virtue. Dickens uses the character of Oliver to challenge Victorian concepts that paupers and criminals are already evil at birth, that evil is innate and inborn. He argues that although a corrupt environment my be an important source of vice; environment is not the defining factor.

Oliver is incorruptible. He conveys shock and horror when he sees the Artful Dodger and Charley Bates pick a stranger’s pocket. He is appalled at being forced to participate in burglary. Oliver possesses moral scruples at a very young age, is this belief in the sanctity of property inborn?

Oliver also speaks in proper King’s English. His grammatical fastidiousness is inexplicable, as Oliver has not received an education. He suffers abuse at the hands of many, but he never fails to show strength of character and the ability to forgive. He looks for the good in people no matter what. Rather than becoming upset or angry when forced to assist in the robbery, Oliver asks that he be allowed to “run away and die in the fields.” He doesn't exemplify the theme of "good vs evil" because he's simply GOOD. He's a beautiful innocent boy.......... he cannot be corrupted.

Oliver is a young, good-hearted, and kind--but often mistreated--orphan who is raised in a workhouse, and finds himself indentured to an undertaker, living with thieves, and eventually taken in by the kind Mr. Brownlow and Mrs. Maylie. His generosity of spirit is total, and even when faced with serious maltreatment, he never loses his sense of morality or kindness.
