Oliver Twist is filled with satirical irony. Dickens delights in satirizing the institutions so prevalent in England at the time; workhouses, unfair laws, orphanages, and the justice system. Dickens believed that each of these institutions were corrupt, unjust, and inhumane.
An example can be found in Dickens declaring Bumble, "so mighty a personage as a beadle." A beadle, of course, is of no importance at all.......... but he has an awfully good time poking fun at the fact that Bumble does in fact believe he is important.
