Monk character

Monks is a minor character who plays a major role in the novel. He is Oliver's half brother although Oliver does not know this. Monks is an all around nasty guy. Monks probably has epilepsy and the disease seems to accentuate his nastiness. Mr. Brownlow points out that Monks’s "evil passions, vice, and profligacy festered till they found a vent in a hideous disease which has made your face an index even to your mind."
