Oliver finds himself a victim of the society in which he lives; he is forced into servitude with such people as Bill Sikes and his gang, he is treated as a child who should be pleased with the "Christian" treatment at the orphanage when, in fact, he has to beg just for more food, and he becomes a criminal in the service of men like Bill Sikes. However, no matter how much he suffers, he keeps an essentially uncorrupted soul and lives, in the end, as a relatively pure character.
