Oliver, when he is sent to the orphanage, is sent there because they believe he is poverty-stricken. When he asks for more porridge, he is severely chastised on the grounds he should be thankful for what he has. (The porridge is hardly edible and there is no question that Oliver is hungry). The poverty continues when he is recruited into Bill Sykes "gang" and becomes a thief and a pickpocket. Even if they do well, in their pickpocketing, they do not live well, nor do they eat well. Their life is truly drenched in poverty from every angle.
